Legendary players like George Lewis, Sweet Emma Barrett and Kid Thomas Valentine, all rooted in the formative years jazz, were its original stars. That generation is long gone now, yet the hall is still ...

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band made landmark strides earlier this year with the release of their new album That’s It!, the band’s first album of original compositions in its entire fifty-year history. And now, the vivacious first video from this seminal album is available to watch and share HERE from the record’s title track.

For this video PHJB teamed up with Genero.tv, giving filmmakers the opportunity to create a music video for “That’s It!” The winner was young up-and-coming filmmaker Jo Roy, who brought extra energy and levity to the horn-filled track complete with black ties and break dancing. Check it out via its debut courtesy of Gawker HERE.

That’s It! was produced by My Morning Jacket's Jim James and Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s Creative Director Ben Jaffe and recorded at The Preservation Hall.  As these are all brand-new compositions, band members Ben Jaffe, Charlie Gabriel, Rickie Monie and Clint Maedgen wrote for the album and collaborated with Paul Williams, Dan Wilson and Chris Stapleton on several songs. The band will be playing across the US throughout the rest of 2013, catch them in a town near you soon.

The Preservation Hall Foundation would like to extend an invitation to fans all over the world to accompany the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on their historic first trip to Cuba. This landmark meeting between the people of Havana and this quintessential American tradition will mark the beginning of what is sure to be a fruitful relationship.

The event includes an in-depth look at the city as well as unforgettable musical experiences highlighted by Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s opening set for the 37th annual Havana Jazz Festival. The event will take place from Monday December 14 through Tuesday December 22, 2015 and is produced by Cuba Tours and Travel. It is fully authorized as a “People to People” excursion to Cuba.

While the focus of the exploration is to accompany PHJB to their major concert date the experience will also allow the group to meet and get to know everyday Cuban people, visit the best and most innovative music venues, as well as meet musicians and composers while visiting a variety of artist studios.

This package also marks the expansion of the Preservation Hall Foundation’s “Neighborhood Horns” program. The program, which has seen incredible success in New Orleans, provides instruments to classrooms in order for children to receive a musical education. The foundation will be partnering with the longtime Cuban music NGO The Horns Project/Horns to Havana. This partnership will also further the foundation’s mission to “Protect, Preserve, and Perpetuate New Orleans music and culture” by communicating the story of Preservation Hall to the Cuban people and exploring the two cities’ common Afro-Caribbean musical bond.

It is our great pleasure and honor to share the news that The Preservation Hall Jazz Band has been officially inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The Preservation Hall Recordings album New Orleans’ Sweet Emma and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band was selected as an official inductee in the 2014 annual list of 25 recordings that are deemed “culturally, historically, aesthetically significant.”

About the album the registry said, “This 1964 offering by seven veterans of New Orleans jazz, before a live Minneapolis audience, well illustrates the credo of music spoken simply—play the melody from the heart and elaborate with care.” They also described the band’s music as “simple, direct and majestic.”

Other selections this year include RadioheadThe Doors, and Joan Baez among others. These additions bring the total number of recordings on the registry to 425.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British Royalty or the King of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director, Ben Jaffe, the son of founders Allan and Sandra, Preservation Hall continues with a deep reverence and consciousness of its greatest attributes in the modern day as a venue, band, and record label.

The PHJB began touring in 1963 and for many years there were several bands successfully touring under the name Preservation Hall. Many of the band's charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early twentieth century including Buddy BoldenJelly Roll MortonLouis Armstrong, and Bunk Johnson. Band leaders over the band's history include the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and in the modern day Wendell and John Brunious.

These founding artists and dozens of others passed on the lessons of their music to a younger generation who now follow in their footsteps like the current lineup. With a live show that is nothing short of an absolutely must-see, be sure to check out the Preservation Hall Jazz Band as they make their way across the United States this spring and summer. A full list of tour dates can be found below.

Current Lineup:
Ben Jaffe - Creative Director and Tuba
Mark Braud - Trumpet and Vocals
Charlie Gabriel - Clarinet and Vocals
Clint Maedgen - Saxophone and Vocals
Joe Lastie, Jr. - Drums
Rickie Monie - Piano
Ronell Johnson - Tuba, Trombone, and Vocals

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a New Orleans Jazz Band, NOT a Dixieland Jazz Band. While both music styles originated in New Orleans in and around the same time, the connotations and history are radically different.  “Dixie’s Land” and “Dixie” were songs to come out of the late 19th Century, and were popular folk songs that came out of the blackface minstrelsy.  The words were written in comic, and exaggerated versions of the African American Vernacular, and tell the story of a freed black slave pining for the plantation of his birth.  It is because of these significantly hateful, and racist roots, that the Preservation Hall Jazz Band is opposed to any reference to “Dixie” in describing their music, and heritage.

August 12, 2014 - NEW ORLEANS: Preservation Hall Foundation is pleased to announce the Preservation Hall Ball benefit gala at The Civic Theater, a newly restored Bowery Presents venue in the burgeoning Central Business District of New Orleans, Friday, October 3rd, 2014.
Grammy-winner and New Orleans icon Allen Toussaint will join Preservation Hall Jazz Band at The Civic to debut their joint “Oh Yeah!” national tour, which will depart for 40 shows across the country the following week.

Singer-songwriter and folk icon Ani DiFranco, in addition to Oakland, California based experimental world fusion and electronic music group Beats Antique, and New Orleans resident Alexander Ebert, lead singer and songwriter of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, will also perform and join The Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a night of unique musical collaborations and entertainment, with more guests artists to be announced.

All proceeds from the Preservation Hall Ball will directly benefit The Preservation Hall Foundation. The Preservation Hall Foundation’s mission is to protect and perpetuate music education programs for underprivileged children in the greater New Orleans area.  The foundation sponsors a wide array of community programs ranging from school field trips, master classes, free community performances, and private lessons. More information on programs and how to get involved here.

The Preservation Hall Ball will pay tribute to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s first resident pianist and touring band leader "Sweet" Emma Barrett. The concert will mark the 50th anniversary of “Sweet Emma and Her Preservation Hall Jazz Band,” the legendary performance at Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theatre, which was recorded and released by Preservation Hall Recordings in 1964.

“Sweet Emma and her Preservation Hall Jazz Band toured at the crux of the Civil Rights Movement following the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Her impact should not be forgotten so we’re taking this opportunity playing with another New Orleans piano giant, Allen Toussaint, to commemorate her tour and the live recording” says Ben Jaffe, Creative Director of Preservation Hall.

In addition to the show at the Civic Theater, a special patron package will be available to Foundation donors. Patron pass holders are invited to a special after show event at Preservation Hall and will be treated to an exclusive open bar with light appetizers.  Patrons will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with Preservation Hall Jazz Band and leave the showcase with a limited edition coffee table book and vinyl re-release of the Sweet Emma recording.

Pre-sale tickets for Preservation Hall Ball go on sale this Wednesday, August 13th at 1pm ET. General on-sale begins Friday, August 15th at 10am EST. Tickets available at the Preservation Hall box office and online.

Tour Puts Two New Orleans Legends Together on the

Road for the First Time Ever

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band announced today that, for the first time, they will be touring the United States with their long-time friend and fellow New Orleans icon Allen Toussaint. The band, which bases out of the legendary French Quarter venue Preservation Hall, has performed around the world and toured with a diverse list of artists, from My Morning Jacket to The Blind Boys of Alabama, but, has never before toured America with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted singer, pianist, songwriter, and producer known for penning many New Orleans classics including “Southern Nights” and “Working in a Coal Mine.”

“After all these years of playing together in New Orleans and coming to the same festivals here and there around the world, it is amazing that we never hit the road as a package before” said Preservation Hall band leader Ben Jaffe.  “It was almost as if we’ve always just assumed it had already happened, and then one day it was like ‘Oh yeah, WE need to do this thing’ and the Oh Yeah! Tour was born.”

The Oh Yeah! Tour, which is produced by Columbia Artists Management LLC will be coming to performing arts centers around the country, as well as popular nightclubs like The Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY and the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA.  The tour starts at the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts in East Lansing, MI on Oct. 8th and ends on Nov. 29th at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, CA (see full itinerary below).

Unlike many tour packages, where two artists tour together but perform their own shows, this tour will be a combined show, with lots of interaction between the two legends.  “I’ve been playing with the guys in Preservation Hall around New Orleans since the 1960’s, so I’m really excited to finally get out on the road and perform together with them every night on a tour,” said Mr. Toussaint, “we’re going to have a lot of fun, and so will the audience.”

With Mardi Gras just around the corner, there is no better band to celebrate it with than New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Now available just in time for your Fat Tuesday festivities is the band’s brand-new Spotify Session and bandleader Ben Jaffe’s Guide to Mardi Gras playlist where Ben shares some of his favorite artists and their impact on New Orleans music and Preservation Hall through the decades. Listen to it HERE.

And this Sunday, March 9th, tune in to CBS Sunday Morning to delve into the history of Preservation Hall and its band. Both known as American institutions, they continue to preserve New Orleans jazz as well as pass it along to new generations. With this idea in mind, three generations of Jaffes will be in the segment including co-founder Sandy Jaffe, current bandleader Ben Jaffe and Ben’s 19-month-old daughter Emma.

Last July, the band released That’s It!, their first album of new compositions in its entire fifty year history, which was produced by My Morning Jacket’s Jim James. In continued support of the album, the band is touring the South this March.  Head below to check out the upcoming dates.
